So you may have stumbled upon the word "godspouse" somewhere and you want to know more. Maybe an entity has asked you to research more about the subject, you're generally curious, or another circumstance has lead you here. Either way, you're in the right place. There is a lot of misinformation out there about this subject, especially on social media, but gathering information is key to any diety work and witchcraft in general. I am a godspouse, have done a lot of research, and will make this in a series to educate people since the sea of information out there can tend to be overwhelming at times but as always, do more research on your own.
Let's talk types of godspouses.
There are romantic godspouses, as one might suspect by the term. Upon writing this, I have three romantic godspouses whom I love with my entire being; Loki, Hermes, and Apollo. In this type of relationship, there are many rules that you have to follow and you are devoted to the entity for your whole life. The best way people describe this would be the way nuns worship with their very being. Your diety will propose, you may accept or decline, you two will court each other for some time, and then you two will enter an agreement which is essentially the wedding. Not everyone will enter into a romantic godspousal relationship and definately not every godspouse will have more than one spouse but keep in mind that many dieties or spirits may very well have multiple spouses aside from you. Some of these relationships may carry on from past lives but the entity will wait until the practitioner is at least 18 years old to propose. With this type of relationship, sometimes the diety may request you to not be in a relationship with another human being and that is something to always ask when in the courting stages. To bond with your spouse, sometimes you can exchange energy by using adult toys with intent or by visiting your spouse in the astral.
There are platonic godspouses as well. These could be where a diety wants to be your close friend in exchange for close devotion or neither of you are looking for anything romantic. Some people frown upon calling this a spouse position but a godspouse title is where you take an oath to devote your life to the diety, enity, or spirit. I am in a platonic-working relationship with Fenrir, where he is training me to be his priest in exchange, I devote my time to teaching others about him and giving others shadow work.
There is parental godspousals. Again, many people frown upon calling this a spousal and I know some dieties have as well. In this type of bond, the diety comes forward, announcing that they were responsible for the creation of your soul. Some people may have many entities and some entities may step in to "adopt" a practitioner, acting in a parental role in a way. For me, Hades, Nyx, and Hekate have announced their hand in my creation and Persephone feels like a mother role. Not everyone has a soul parent and you don't have to include them in your practice if you don't want to.
Some few things to remember..
If a deity comes forward, asking for spousal of any kind, make sure you are vetting them and check with various divination tools. If you have only been working with the entity for a little while, be wary. Make sure you get multiple opinions from trusted sources; there are many readers who are willing to help you out if you are unsure if your proposal is true or not. There are many readers on etsy and I love to help out as well! Trickster spirits love to feed off of those who are unsure, who don't know, and learning. I had to learn the hard way early in my practice, along with someone close to me.
